"CULTURAL POLICIES AT THE END OF THE CENTURY:

Cultural Policies at the End of the Century: State and Civil Society in a Time of Regional Integration and Globalization

The Centro de Estudios Interdisciplinarios Latinoamericanos (CEIL) is an interdisciplinary research center focused on Latin America and is hosting the present project as a continuation of its current research. The project, "Cultural Policies at the End of the Century: State and Civil Society in a Time of Regional Integration and Globalization", is addressed to scholars at the senior and junior level from Latin America, the United States, Canada and Europe, whose research interests are related to studies of postdictatorship societies and cultural policies in the context of regional integration and globalization. Projects offering a comparative analysis of Uruguay eith other Latin American countries - especially those of MERCOSUR - or with the United States, Canada or Europe are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

The 2001 -2002 period -the last year of the Program, call for research projects is focus on the following four topics:

 

1° - Projects related to the Cultural Policies of State Cultural Institutions at National or Municipal level (Museums, TV stations, "Houses or cultural centers" -"casas de cultura"-, etc.), during Dictatorship in Uruguay or to the State Cultural Policies of the National and Municipal level during the PostDictatorship period also in Uruguay.

 

2° - Projects analyzing the "hard data" that policymakers take into account in times of regional integration and globalization at the moment of their decision making;

 

3° - Projects analyzing the Cultural Policies or Cultural Actions of community organizations and National State in times of regional integration or globalization aiming both the recuperation of past and the construction of future; id est., movements or actions tending to recuperate "local memories" or "social solidarity" as well as projects referred to Cultural policies regarding the future of Nation State and organizations coming out of Civil Society; specially those oriented to young people.

 

4° - Projects considering the debates on monuments, demonstrations and commemorations referred to "detained/disappeared" person during Dictatorships in different countries of the Mercosur. (Projects considered more than one country will be prefered). This projects should consider the relation between the State and civil society and its articulation with the new international (global) role of Human Rights.

 

Applications will be considered on a yearly basis either for the first semester (April - July) or for the second (August - December). Scholars in the humanities, social sciences or fields related to the program topics with strong interests in multidisciplinary cultural studies can apply.
